Director of Education and Community Engagement
Overview
The Director of Education and Community Engagement provides strategic leadership for AFCPE’s education and membership programs, community engagement initiatives, and professional development offerings. This role ensures AFC candidates have access to the education required to earn the AFC® certification, including self-study, instructor-led learning, and registered education program pathways, and supports continuing education for professional development and certification maintenance.
The Director oversees the Education Manager, Education Coordinator, and Community Engagement Manager, ensuring alignment with AFCPE’s mission, NCCA accreditation standards, and nonprofit values of fairness, transparency, and educational integrity. This position blends strategic planning, program development, membership growth, and partnership building to advance AFCPE’s goal of improving the economic well-being of individuals and families worldwide.
This position reports directly to the Operations Officer and does not have access to exam content nor exposure to the Exam Development Committee.
Essential Functions:
Strategic Leadership
• Develop and implement a strategic vision for AFCPE’s education, membership, and community engagement programs.
• Align initiatives with organizational goals and industry best practices.
• Monitor trends in financial counseling, coaching, and education to ensure AFCPE remains relevant.
• Participate in strategic planning, goal setting, budgeting, and reporting.
• Oversee departmental budget and day-to-day operations.
Team Oversight
• Provide leadership and supervision for the Education Manager, Education Coordinator, and Community Engagement Manager.
• Set priorities, approve processes, and monitor performance for all education and engagement staff.
• Foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture with clear accountability and professional development.
Education Program Development
• Ensure AFC candidates receive the necessary educational resources and support to achieve certification.
• Oversee instructor-led learning, registered education programs, and continuing education offerings.
• Maintain compliance with NCCA accreditation standards.
• Expand educational opportunities for diverse audiences and underrepresented groups.
• Oversee fellowship and scholarship programs to grow the pipeline of AFC professionals.
Membership Growth & Community Engagement
• Develop strategies to grow and strengthen AFCPE’s professional membership community.
• Oversee initiatives to increase member engagement and retention.
• Guide community engagement strategies that build inclusive, mission-aligned networks.
• Represent AFCPE at conferences and events to promote its mission and programs.
Partnership & Business Development
• Cultivate relationships with universities, nonprofits, financial institutions, and community organizations.
• Secure funding for programs through grants, sponsorships, and partnerships.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Requirements:
• Remote position
• Occasional travel to tradeshows and conferences to represent AFCPE
• 40 hours/week between 9am – 5pm ET
• Mandatory full staff meetings; travel may be required 1-2 times per year
• Mandatory travel to AFCPE Annual Symposium

Qualifications & Requirements Skills and Qualifications:
• Integrity and commitment to AFCPE’s mission
• Bachelor’s Degree or related work experience (in consumer science, personal finance, financial planning, or related field preferred)
• 7+ years of professional work experience in related role
• Strong communicator with effective presentation and public speaking skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with board, staff, and leadership.
• Strong leader and manager of people and processes.
• Ability to prioritize multiple commitments and drive projects through to completion.
• Strategic solutions-oriented problem solver
• Strong business writing, oral communication, and presentation skills
• Proficient in Microsoft office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook)
• Proven ability to develop and deliver high quality programs and strategies to ensure AFCPE continues to set the standard for financial counseling and planning education.
• Ability to network and establish longstanding relationships with key partners to expand AFCPE’s educational programming, content, and reach.
Preferred
• Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC®) or other relevant financial credential (i.e.; AFPC®, FFC®, CFP®, ChFC®, or similar) in good standing for a minimum of 2 years.
