Job Description
Are you passionate about advancing student well-being and creating a campus culture rooted in informed decision-making, care, and personal responsibility? The McDonald Center for Student Well-Being is seeking a dynamic and collaborative Assistant Director for Substance Use Prevention & Education to help shape a comprehensive, public health - focused approach to substance use education at Notre Dame.

In this highly impactful role, you will lead innovative, population-based prevention initiatives and provide meaningful one-on-one educational interventions that equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to thrive at Notre Dame and beyond. Working alongside an engaged team of professionals and student leaders, you will help foster a culture of wellness that supports academic success, personal growth, and lifelong well-being.

Substance Use Prevention and Education
  • Serve as the primary facilitator and manager of the nationally recognized Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) program.
  • Lead engaging, evidence-based programming addressing alcohol, tobacco, and other drug education.
  • Expand and strengthen support for students in recovery through initiatives such as Recovery Is Spoken Here and SMART Recovery.
  • Partner collaboratively with campus stakeholders to advance alcohol education and risk reduction strategies through a multidisciplinary lens.
  • Design, implement, and assess workshops, presentations, and outreach efforts that meaningfully engage the campus community.
  • Cultivate and coordinate student-led prevention initiatives by mentoring student employees, clubs, residence hall leaders, and peer educators.

Supervision
  • Collaborate closely with the full-time Program Coordinator for Alcohol Education to advance strategic and developmental initiatives.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise student employees, including senior fellows and program assistants.
  • Advise student organizations aligned with well-being and prevention efforts, providing guidance on programming, budgeting, and leadership development.

Broader Engagement & Professional Growth
  • Serve as an integral member of the Division of Student Affairs and Student Health & Wellness teams, contributing to a unified approach to student development.
  • Participate in campus-wide facilitation teams for initiatives such as GreeNDot, Mental Health First Aid, and I CAN Help.
  • Represent Notre Dame at regional and national conferences, remaining current in best practices and emerging trends in collegiate health promotion.

Qualifications
Qualifications and Skills
  • Master's Degree in Health Education, Health Promotion, Public Health, Social Work or related field.
  • 2+ years experience planning, implementing, and evaluating evidence- and theory-informed health promotion initiatives to meet college students' development issues, health needs, and interests.
  • Demonstrated skills in supporting student development in a one-on-one setting, through supervision, case management, or related experiences.
  • Ability to deliver presentations and educational experiences for a variety of audiences.
  • The successful candidate will also possess a commitment to formulating opportunities consistent with the mission of a Catholic university founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross.
  • Certification/License such as Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or health/wellness coaching certification, preferred.
  • Training in Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) and/or Motivation Interviewing, preferred.


Additional Information
Salary: Up to $55,000
