Azusa Pacific University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Theology.

THE UNIVERSITY: Founded in 1899, Azusa Pacific University (http://www.apu.edu) is one of the largest Christian universities in the nation offering 8 doctoral programs, 43 master’s degrees, 14 credentialing programs, 63 bachelor’s degrees, 4 associate degrees and 18 certificate programs. These are offered at the university’s main campus in Azusa, six regional centers, and online. The university recently earned a 9-year reaffirmation of their accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and holds 13 other specialized accreditations. Azusa Pacific University is an evangelical Christian community of disciples and scholars who seek to advance the work of God in the world through academic excellence in liberal arts and professional programs of higher education that encourage students to develop a Christian perspective of truth and life.

THE SCHOOL: The School of Theology at Azusa Pacific University, an expansion of an institution that began in 1899 with the formation of the Training School for Christian Workers, adheres to its Wesleyan theological tradition. The School of Theology prepares men and women for ministry in the Church, whether as lay persons or as ordained professionals, through its accredited degree programs. The School of Theology is comprised of two distinct academic entities: the undergraduate division and Azusa Pacific Seminary. The undergraduate programs available in the school’s four departments (Biblical Studies, Practical Theology, Philosophy, and Theology) offer courses of study that encourage the search for truth about God, human existence in relationship to God, and the world as God’s creation.

THE DEAN: Reporting to the Provost, the Dean of the School of Theology serves as the chief academic and financial officer of the School and provides leadership in areas of teaching and curricular development, research, faculty engagement, student development, fiscal management, fund-raising and external affairs. He or she has overall responsibility for the day to day functions of both the Undergraduate and Seminary Divisions. The Dean will actively participate in senior leadership groups including the Academic Cabinet and the President’s Council. The Dean will also promote engagement opportunities with local church bodies and the general community and will demonstrate a faith-based approach to student advising, scholarly pursuits, activities, and outreach to students.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS – The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
* A strong affinity with the Wesleyan tradition.
* A history of active church engagement (e.g. pastoring, serving, teaching, leading, advising).
* Ten or more years of progressively responsible leadership experience in a Christian university, or seminary, church-based ministry or para-church group.
* An earned doctorate from an accredited college, university, school of theology or seminary, preferably in theology, biblical studies, ministry or related degree.
* A collaborative leadership style and highly developed organizational abilities.
* A proven track record of teaching excellence and Christ-like character.
* The ability to effectively integrate her or his Christian faith in teaching venues and scholarship and to mentor faculty in the integration of Christian faith in their academic disciplines.
* Strong communication skills in both interpersonal and public settings.
* Proven track record of working effectively with diverse populations and demonstrable intercultural competence.
