Special Initiatives Director
Position Summary:

Tides Client Services (CS) Department interacts directly with Tides clients to provide strategic and management services to drive high impact, effective philanthropy and to scale promising social ventures. The Special Initiatives Director will be the primary leader for development of Tides engagement with existing and new innovative and non-traditional clients to respond to, design, and scale clients’ strategic goals. This could include a number of client types, including multi-stakeholder initiatives, collective action funds, for-profit social ventures, and government entities. Other responsibilities include: leading the development and convening of the Tides network of clients; establishing Tides as an expert and connector in collective impact ecosystems; and ensuring that Tides stays on the leading edge of innovation in the philanthropic and social venture fields. This position can be located in New York or San Francisco.

Essential Functions:

FUELING GROWTH:

•Deepen Tides expertise and knowledge management in multi-stakeholder philanthropic and social venture ecosystems

•Establish and roll out a flexible and innovative engagement model for all Client Services Staff and staff in additional Tides departments to:

1.Market and deliver additional and expanded innovative multi-stakeholder philanthropic and strategic impact and investment opportunities for existing clients

2.Expand CS and Tides’ ability to deepening our understanding and expertise around new multi-stakeholder, collective action, for-profit social venture, and government engagement opportunities that are aligned with clients’ interests and impact strategies

3.Personally model and practice the curation and delivery of expertise to a set of clients around a relevant social change issue area(s) and/or innovative philanthropic approach(es)

•Work closely with the Vice President, Strategic Partnerships & Communications on new and existing client engagement models to ensure innovative, consistent and compelling service offerings and delivery

•Develop matrix staffing approaches with all Tides departments, including Grants, and Finance teams, that accelerate success, growth and impact of leading-edge innovative clients

•Train and mentor CS team on new models for client engagement and track successes and lessons learned

•Develop a pipeline of specific new business opportunities with multi-stakeholder and non-traditional Tides clients and close those clients to achieve annual enhanced service goal for CS Department:

1.Coordinate client requirements

2.Develop and negotiate contracts

3.Integrate contract requirements with Tides Strategic Partnerships

•Develop and maintain broad external relations with desired clients in specific philanthropic and social venture ecosystems, issue areas and industry areas; ensure strategies and capabilities of new clients are aligned with Tides’ objectives

•Establish and execute tactical plans in support of Tides’ strategic growth and expansion in new client sectors

•Enhance Tides ability to work with philanthropic and social venture clients to measure and evaluate impact of collaborative efforts.

•Align with COO and other CS Directors to mine the Tides Client Network for prospective new clients, deeper engagement with current clients and enhanced services opportunities

SERVICE INNOVATIONS:

•Lead development of new Tides client types and collaborative models to ensure Tides reaches out to non-traditional sectors capable of driving social impact

•Assist with roll out Tides’ differentiated service models, pricing, and aligned marketing materials to grantmaking clients

•Initiate and work collaboratively to develop client proposals and presentation materials including direct content contribution to Tides branding, marketing and website efforts

VOICE & INFLUENCE:

•Lead Client Services staff to harness the power of the Tides network by designing, planning and executing client convenings, collaborative events and information exchange between all types of Tides clients and facilitating thoughtful connections among the network toward strategic alliances and enhanced positive social outcomes, impacts and systemic changes

•Assist Client Services engagement with the Communications team in advancing Tides’ innovative expertise in Tides’ strategic voice and influence activities in written publications, events and approaches

•Demonstrate commitment to cross boundaries inside and outside the organization as needed to drive acceleration and improve relationships among individuals, groups and movements

GENERAL:

•Drive the Tides Vision, Mission and Approach into action

•Take responsibility for specific deliverables in the 2017 Strategic Path, i.e., 1) New service model to accelerate impact, 2) Upgraded and improved services to contribute to financial strength, 3) Positioning for new client business, 4) Stronger voice in Social Impact field, and 5) Harness the wisdom and skill of the Tides Network

•Serve as a Primary Liaison for Client Services innovative services with Strategic Partnerships department

•Manage a small and strategic portfolio of high-touch Tides clients

•Work interactively with the COO to align work and goals in Client Services for mutual benefit and enhancement

•Serve as a member of the Tides Business Development Team

Qualifications & Requirements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

•B.S. or higher degree MBA preferred, or equivalent experience

•15+ years of relevant and applicable work experience in:

•Field of philanthropy, work with high net-worth individuals (HNWI) and funders, or social ventures

•Demonstrated experience in new business generation and creation of new client engagement models and service offerings

•Business and client development, the structuring of complex offers, and negotiating terms

•A strong understanding of the philanthropic advisory service, social venture and intermediary sector and Tides Vision, Mission and Approach

•Deep knowledge in fields of social innovation and social justice, including grantmaking, multi-stakeholder collaborative partnerships, and impact and evaluation

•Demonstrated understanding of specific issue and/or industry areas in the global philanthropic and market

•Experience in training and mentoring a consultative selling team

•Ability to build long term relationships with good networking track record

•Demonstrated ability to prioritize amongst multiple commitments, and to drive multiple high profile and complex projects simultaneously in a challenging and fluid environment

•Ability to identify key influencers and market drivers that impact Tides’ introduction and expansion

•Ability to impact the sustainability of the organization by differentiating core and enhanced services

•Demonstrated ability to read and interpret contracts, analyze market trends, model potential solutions, interpret market research, and review technical data

•Demonstrated success with establishing or expanding business in new markets

•Ability to manage relationship and excellent communication and listening skills with senior levels of management and all levels of staff and clients

•Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
