What Are You Worth? Things to consider when selecting your major. (7370 hits)

What is your motivation when choosing your major?

Is it the money you thirst for? With money comes affordability. The ability to provide a lifestyle that will produce comfort, community service, and stability is the reason many attend college . To whom much is given, much is required. Aiming for a major that will produce a high salary means you will have to sacrifice much during and after your college years.

Will you choose a major that leads to your plans to leave a positive impact on this world? Maybe you are inspired to help the country “Go Green”. Or you may want to help make laws that will lower the price of healthcare in America. There is not a lot of money or time to waste in college when it comes to succeeding in your Major. This is a topic that is prevalent throughout your years in school.

Are HBCU graduates missing the mark for earning high paying salaries? Engineering is where it’s at jack!

“Engineering is the application of mathematics, empirical evidence and scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge in order to invent, innovate, design, build, maintain, research, and improve structures, machines, tools, systems, components, materials, processes and organizations. “ A lot of Fortune 50 companies including Microsoft and Nextera Energy, seek graduates who have a degree in Engineering. Every student should take a summer course in Engineering. Aiming for the top should be encouraged by all parents.

Is the HBCU community money minded? Some students will select a major simply because of its popularity, or because it produces a high paying salary. While others will select a major based off of their passion and love of the subject. When I started my college experience I chose Computer Information Systems as my major, but I did not first examine the fact that I was not passionate or naturally interested in that field. Once I realized the major was not the best fit I assessed my mindset. What type of work falls in line with my talents and experience..these are the questions one should ask oneself.. It was Entrepreneurship that got a rise out of me. The path my father chose, I too wanted to pursue. So Business Management it was, and a Business on campus I created. With a Cosmetology license in hand I was able to produce funds for survival by starting: “Tenda Luvin Haircare”.

Many students are self employed but are not encouraged or cultivated to major in Business. There is risk involved in any career, but many think Entrepreneurship has the most risks. Examine the risks. Whatever our students select as a major, let us encourage them to focus on getting work experience. Use HBCUConnect.com or your Career Services and Work Study offices on campus to help in the quest to find a job or Internship that will fit.
