THE POSITION: Join our senior scientific team and help lead critical efforts to enhance the scientific review of NIH grant applications. Your creative decisions, leadership and team building could significantly affect the direction of science and health in the U.S. and abroad. The Center for Scientific Review (CSR) is seeking a Director for its Division of Neuroscience, Development and Aging (DNDA). If you are selected and join us, you would report directly to the CSR Director and provide scientific leadership for the Division, which handles reviews covering the broad field of neuroscience research, ranging from molecular, cellular, developmental, and technological studies to cognitive, functional, physiological, behavioral and clinical research. The Director of DNDA is a member of CSR’s senior management, advises the Director of CSR and other NIH officials on scientific issues relevant to the Division and its mission, and represents CSR within and outside of NIH. You would lead approximately 40 Scientific Review Officers (SROs) and the review activities of 40-50 study sections and special emphasis panels in 5 Integrated Review Groups (IRGs) by supervising IRG Chiefs in managing a broad range of human resources issues, recruiting and mentoring, ensuring that peer review principles and practices are applied in a consistent manner across the Division, and overseeing management of the Division’s budget.

As the DNDA Director, you would play a key role in developing plans and providing direction as the peer review process evolves and NIH works to maintain and enhance it. You also would :1) participate in strategic planning activities for achieving CSR’s scientific and management goals; 2) help establish principles and practices related to referral and review; and 3) direct implementation of program and management changes by establishing priorities, coordinating activities, and tracking and reporting progress. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Applicants must possess a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree, as well as senior-level research experience in basic, translational, behavioral or clinical neuroscience. Candidates should be outstanding communicators, known and respected within their professions as distinguished individuals with recognized competence, have supervisory and mentoring experience, including experience representing an organization with integrity and diplomacy. Visionary leadership characteristics are crucial to attract and nurture outstanding professional staff to best serve the nation’s biomedical scientific mission at the NIH. Applicants should also demonstrate the ability to think strategically, work collaboratively and use a consultative approach to problem solving and decision making. Experience in NIH peer review is highly desirable.

SALARY/BENEFITS: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Full Federal benefits including leave, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, retirement, and savings plan (401K equivalent) will be provided. This position is subject to the conflict of interest statutes and regulations that govern activities with outside organizations. This position will require completion of an annual public financial disclosure report and is subject to a background investigation.
